USC showcases innovative research at online symposium

POSTED : 17 Dec 2020

The University of the Southern Caribbean recently held an online symposium promoting a revolutionary concept of healthcare Management to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The program was held on Friday the 11th of December, 2020 with participants from various areas such as health professionals, students, academics and others.

This innovative solution was developed by the University's very own Dr Ricardo Rodriguez, as an extension of his PhD thesis. This solution has the potential to reimagine healthcare across the Caribbean.

This symposium would normally have been an in-person activity, but due to the Pandemic was presented as an online event. The proof of concept that was presented, demonstrated how patient care can be enhanced by

remote monitoring using sensors to capture patient vitals and other care-related data, which can be transmitted over a virtual network. For example, a doctor 100 miles away, can know within a few seconds, the change in temperature of a patient he is monitoring purely using the sensor-based networks (SBN) technology called Sensors Plus. This allows us to expand healthcare management from the hospital alone to elderly Care homes and domestic homes as well, thereby also promoting community Health service.

This promotion video explains how the system works is provided here..

The University of the Southern Caribbean is the only Tertiary academic institution within the Caribbean Union Conference.
