Local community saves church from destruction
Pastor Leslie Butcher together with the entire leadership and members are very grateful for the timely intervention by the villagers in saving the church from certain destruction.
On Friday June 24, 2011 at approximately 6:15 pm Mr. Jeffrey Sydney observed smoke issuing from the roof of the San Pedro SDA Church situated at #324 San Pedro Road, San Pedro. A closer observation revealed that the church was on fire. He therefore raised an alarm and together with nearby residents they forcefully entered the building through a window. They were able to open the front door and about 20 of them cooperated and extinguished the fire. While the fire was being extinguished some quickly assisted in securing the furniture and musical instruments. Therefore the Rio Claro Fire Service with Acting Fire Service Officer Phillip in charge arrived. Later members of the Rio Claro Police Station and a crew from T&TEC arrived.
After the investigation was carried the Officer in Charge of the service crew stated that the fire was accidental and suggested that the origin may have been electrical in nature with the building’s internal wiring. The estimated value of the church was put at $350,000.00. The estimated value of the contents of the building was approx. $100,000.00. It was estimated that the damage to the building was approximately $50,000.00 and to the content approximately $30,000.00.
On the following day June 26, 2011 a loud speaker was used throughout the street where the church is located to thank the residents for their quick response, co-operation and risking their lives to save the church.
