USC holds 78th Graduation Exercises

The University of the Southern Caribbean USC, held its graduation exercise on Sunday 15th May 2011 on the University grounds. This year over 400 students received undergraduate and graduate degrees in various disciplines. The class theme was Inspired by a Dream, Impassioned by a purpose, and Empowered for destiny!   

This year, the graduation featured two commencement programs were held, the first for students from the Schools of Social Sciences and  Business was held in the morning period and the second in the afternoon was for the other schools  within the university, these being Schools of Education and Human Sciences, Sciences and Technology, Theology and Religion and School of Humanities.   

The USC’s graduation exercise is conducted over weekend and starts with a sundown service of thanksgiving to God on Friday evening. Dr. Clive Dottin, an alumnus of the university and a Departmental Director of the Caribbean Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. In his charge he exhorted the students to excellence. 

The Sabbath service was a rich offering of university talent and the featured speaker, another past student of the university, Ps Claudette Andrews, presently serving as Women’s and Children Ministries Director of the Caribbean Union Conference of SDA. In her stirring insightful delivery she challenged the students and graduating class for the need for “higher service, not just to society, but to God”. 

Both commencement exercises were conducted to the same format and the guest speaker for both was Dr.Milton Haynes, a Barbadian, and well respected academic, author and musician is Clinical Professor at the New York University School of Medicine. Many persons will remember the use of shackles as a prop by the speaker who ‘having served an arrest warrant’, ‘release the students to serve humanity’. 

A new feature of the USC’s Graduation exercise is the portraits of excellence awards and the recipients for this year was Mr. Clive Clarke, and Mrs. Zita Phriday-Lewis. Mr. Clark is currently the IT Manager at the Ministry of Transport and Works, and Mrs. Lewis, the CEO of the Eastern Group of Companies. 

USC is an Adventist university offering graduate and undergraduate degrees and is the flagship educational institution within the Caribbean Union.
