October 1, 2010 marks the 150th anniversary of the adoption of the name “Seventh-day Adventist.” The following day, Sabbath October 2, Adventists worldwide are invited to commemorate the anniversary in a variety of ways. Although the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists was not organized until 1863, our records reveal that the name Seventh-day Adventist was formally voted October 1, 1860, for use by the fledgling church’s publishing house as well as for its local congregations.

James Nix, director of the Ellen G White Estate, and chair of the 150 SDA Anniversary Committee recently observed, “Names identify persons and organizations. By incorporating two of our major doctrinal beliefs in our denomination’s name, "Seventh-day Adventist” identifies who we are as a world church family".

On Sabbath October 2, 2010, the Sabbath closest to the anniversary date, all Adventists in churches, institutions and organizations are invited to commemorate the choosing of our church’s name. Program suggestions, historical resources, videos, and other information to assist you in commemorating this significant event are available at www.150sda.org. Additional materials are being added continually and all congregation are invited to join the celebration, if not on that particular Sabbath, certainly during the month of October. I am certain that all who avail themselves of this once in a lifetime anniversary celebration, will receive abundant blessings. So visit www.150sda.org and download all the information you need to make the commemoration a special one.
